The Best Hikes in Northern Mallorca: Trails We Love

From dramatic coastal trails to mountain summits, discover the best hikes in northern Mallorca that we include in our fitness retreat programme.

·

The Serra de Tramuntana — the dramatic mountain range that runs along Mallorca's northern coast — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest hiking destinations in the Mediterranean. From our base in Cala San Vicente, some of the best trails on the island are right on our doorstep.

Hiking is a core part of the Ultimate Fitness Holiday experience. It is not just exercise — it is a chance to see landscapes that take your breath away, challenge yourself in a completely natural environment, and share incredible moments with your group. Here are the trails we love most.

The Cala Boquer Trail

Difficulty: Moderate | Distance: ~5km return | Time: 1.5–2 hours

Starting from the edge of Port of Pollenca, this trail winds through a dramatic valley between towering limestone walls. The landscape is raw and wild — Mediterranean scrub, ancient olive trees, and the constant sound of goat bells echoing off the cliffs. At the end, you emerge onto the untouched Cala Boquer beach, surrounded by nothing but rocks, sea, and sky.

This is one of our go-to group hikes because it suits all fitness levels and the reward at the end — a swim in the hidden cove — is unforgettable.

Puig de Maria

Difficulty: Easy–Moderate | Distance: ~3km return | Time: 1–1.5 hours

Rising above Pollenca, the Puig de Maria (Mountain of Mary) is a short but rewarding climb to a 14th-century monastery perched at 330 metres. The trail starts from the edge of town and zigzags up through pine forest. At the top, the views are extraordinary — 360 degrees of northern Mallorca, from the coast to the mountain peaks.

The monastery has a basic cafe where you can have a coffee and a slice of cake before heading back down. It is the perfect afternoon hike on a rest day.

The Coastal Path: Cala San Vicente to Port of Pollenca

Difficulty: Moderate | Distance: ~8km one way | Time: 2.5–3 hours

This stunning coastal trail connects our base in Cala San Vicente with Port of Pollenca, following the coastline through pine forests and along clifftops with constant sea views. The path rises and falls over several headlands, giving you both a serious workout and some of the most spectacular scenery on the island.

We sometimes do this as a one-way hike with a minibus pickup at the other end — or the more adventurous in the group make it a there-and-back challenge.

Ternelles Valley

Difficulty: Easy | Distance: ~6km return | Time: 2 hours

One of the hidden gems of the area, the Ternelles Valley walk follows an ancient route through a beautiful wooded valley to the Castell del Rei — a ruined castle perched on a cliff high above the sea. The trail passes through private land (access is sometimes restricted, so check locally), but when open it is one of the most atmospheric walks in northern Mallorca.

The Calvari Steps and Beyond

Difficulty: Easy | Distance: Variable | Time: 30 min–1 hour

The 365 Calvari steps in Pollenca are a workout in themselves — but for those wanting more, you can continue from the hilltop chapel along a ridge trail with panoramic views over the town and the coast. It is a great option for a shorter hike or an evening walk.

Cap de Formentor Trail

Difficulty: Moderate–Challenging | Distance: Variable | Time: 2–4 hours

The Formentor peninsula offers several hiking options, from gentle walks through pine forests to challenging cliff-edge trails with vertigo-inducing drops. The views are among the most dramatic in all of Mallorca — endless blue sea stretching to the horizon, with the lighthouse perched at the very tip of the island.

The drive to the start of the trail is an experience in itself — see our Port of Pollenca guide for more on the Cap de Formentor road.

Why We Hike

At Ultimate Fitness Holiday, hiking is not an afterthought — it is integral to the programme. These trails challenge you physically while providing mental space that gym workouts simply cannot. The combination of natural beauty, fresh air, and shared experience creates something that stays with you long after you leave.

Every week we choose a different combination of hikes based on the group's fitness level and the weather. No two weeks are the same — and the mountains always have something new to show us.
