I've been running fitness weeks in Cala San Vicente since Oliver and I co-founded Ultimate Fitness Holiday, and one of the questions people ask most often before booking is: "Who else will be there?" It's a fair question — especially if you're coming on your own. So here's the honest answer, based on years of check-ins, group dinners, and Friday farewells.

The typical guest: solo travellers in their 30s, 40s, and 50s

The vast majority of our guests come solo. Some weeks, every single person arrives alone. That might sound daunting if you've never done it before, but it's precisely why the group dynamic works so well — no one's part of a pre-existing pair, so everyone's equally invested in getting to know the others.

Age-wise, we typically host people in their mid-30s through to early 50s. Occasionally someone younger, occasionally someone in their 60s, but the core group sits firmly in that bracket. They're professionals — teachers, nurses, corporate types, small business owners, a few self-employed — taking a week out of normal life. Not athletes. Not people who live in the gym. Just regular people who want to train harder than they would at home, in a place that makes it easy to do so.

Geographically, most guests come from the UK, with a solid share from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Scandinavia. Palma airport (PMI) is well-connected from Northern Europe, which helps. The flight from London is around 2.5 hours; Amsterdam or Brussels roughly the same. Everyone arrives on their own schedule — some on the Saturday morning, some late afternoon — and by Sunday morning, the group has usually gelled.

Fitness levels: from "I used to run" to "I train four times a week"

We get a broad mix. Some guests haven't done structured exercise in months and are here specifically to kickstart something. Others train regularly at home but want a week where they don't have to think about programming, cooking, or motivating themselves. A few are very fit — run marathons, do CrossFit, that sort of thing — and they come for the volume and intensity they can't easily replicate alone.

What matters more than current fitness level is mindset. The people who get the most out of the week are the ones who show up ready to try, ready to be challenged, and ready to support others doing the same. Our coaches scale everything — same circuit, different weights or reps or rest intervals — so no one's left behind and no one's coasting.

We run two morning fitness sessions most days: typically a mix of circuits, HIIT, strength work, and cardio. Afternoons vary — coastal hikes in the Tramuntana mountains, cycling routes, beach boot camps — and evenings are free. Some people go out for dinner in Pollença or Puerto Pollença; others stay in and chat over wine. By Wednesday, the group usually has its own rhythm.

Why people actually book: reset, challenge, or both

When I ask guests on arrival what brought them here, the answers fall into three broad categories. First: "I need to reset." Work's been relentless, life's been stressful, they've let fitness slide, and they want a week where someone else handles the logistics and they just show up. Second: "I want to challenge myself." They're fit, but they're stuck in a routine at home, and they want to see what they're capable of in a different environment. Third: a combination of both — they want the physical challenge and the mental break from normal life.

What's interesting is how often the initial reason shifts by the end of the week. People who came for the fitness reset often say the biggest benefit was the social side — the friendships, the laughs, the fact that they weren't alone for a single meal. People who came to push themselves physically often say the real value was stepping away from work emails and actually sleeping properly for the first time in months.

First-timers vs. repeat guests

Most weeks, we have a mix of first-time guests and people returning for their second, third, or fourth trip. The repeat guests help set the tone — they know how the week works, they're confident in the format, and that confidence is contagious. First-timers often tell me on arrival that they were nervous about coming alone, but by Monday evening, that nervousness has usually disappeared.

We also get a small number of people who've done other fitness retreats — sometimes in Thailand, sometimes elsewhere in Europe — and are trying Mallorca for the first time. They tend to appreciate the proximity (no long-haul flight, no jet lag, same time zone) and the fact that Cala San Vicente isn't a resort. It's a quiet bay with a handful of restaurants, a small beach 400 metres from our venue, and the Tramuntana mountains rising directly behind. You're here to train and rest, not to navigate crowds or touristy distractions.

The group dynamic: why solo travellers choose this over going alone

I think the reason so many solo travellers specifically choose a fitness retreat in Spain over just booking a solo trip is the structure and the guaranteed social element. If you go to Mallorca on your own, you have to figure out where to train, what to cook, how to fill the evenings. You might meet people, you might not. Here, the group is a given. You're training together twice a day, eating together most evenings, hiking or cycling together in the afternoons. Friendships form quickly because everyone's in the same boat — literally and figuratively.

We have eight en-suite rooms at our venue, and we offer shared twin rooms (most affordable), private rooms, and premium private rooms. The shared twins are popular with solo travellers who want to keep costs down and don't mind rooming with another guest. We match people thoughtfully — age, fitness level, whether they've mentioned being a light sleeper — and it almost always works well. Some of the strongest friendships from the week start in those twin rooms.

By Friday, the group often looks completely different to the collection of slightly awkward individuals who arrived on Saturday. There's a lot of laughter, a lot of WhatsApp groups being formed, a lot of talk about coming back together next year. That's the bit you can't manufacture — it just happens when you put the right people in the right environment and give them a week to connect.

What guests actually say about the experience

The feedback we get most often is some version of: "I didn't expect to enjoy the social side as much as the training." People come for the fitness — that's the hook — but they leave talking about the people they met, the conversations over dinner, the inside jokes that developed during a particularly brutal hill sprint session.

Second most common: "I slept better than I have in months." The combination of outdoor training, sea air, and being away from work seems to reset people's sleep patterns almost immediately. By Tuesday or Wednesday, most guests are sleeping through the night and waking up without an alarm.

Third: "I forgot how much I enjoy being outside." A lot of our guests spend most of their lives indoors — offices, gyms, homes — and the week in Cala San Vicente reminds them what it feels like to train outside, hike in the mountains, swim in the sea. The Tramuntana range is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and we use it constantly for hikes and trail runs. It's not just scenery; it's part of the training.
